Types of Tea


As you learned in your schoolbooks, there are literally hundreds of varieties of tea. The quality varies according to the soil, climate and altitude inwhich it is grown and the age and size of the leaves when they are picked

The tea you buy is a delicate blend of some 20 to 30 varieties, carefully selected by expert teatasters to maintain the bigh quality of color, flavor, aroma or body of each brand.

Despite all these varieties, tea can be classified into three broad types: black, oolong or green. " Black tea undergoes a special processing treat ment in which the leaves are allowed to oxidize

Black tea

This turns the leaves black and produces a rich brew. Over 97% Of the tea consumed in the United States is the black type.

Oolong tea

" Oolong tea is semi-oxidized. Its leaves are partly brown and partly green. It brews light in color, and a growing number of Americans have come to prefer its delicate flavor.

Green tea

. Green tea is not oxidized, so the leaves remain green. The brew is pale green in color.

Loose, Teabag or Instant?

 Loose tea is the classic and, to connoisseurs. the preferred form to use in brewing tea. Following package directions. 1 pound makes about 200 cups.

Teabag

The teabag was "accidentally" invented at the turn of the century when a tea merchant tributed his samples in small silk bags. Today, "bags" are made of special filter paper, each holding about a teaspoonful of tea.

Instant tea

Instant tea is commercially prepared by removing the water from a highly concentrated brew It comes in both powdered and liquid forms, times flavored with lemon and sugar or sweeten.
